It is impossible to imagine modern Barcelona without thinking of one of its most emblematic districts: the Eixample. And, within it, one of its most admired neighborhoods: the Dreta del Eixample.

The first steps of the Ildefons Cerdà project took place in this elegant and modernist neighborhood located on the Gothic and El Born, the two most historic areas of the city, until the end of the medieval period.

At the end of the 19th century, when Barcelona needed to grow beyond its walls, the Dreta del Eixample was the chosen place to develop a new city. The process began in Plaza Catalunya and was structured around Paseo de Gracia, turning it into an authentic showcase for modernist architecture of the time.

Barcelona bourgeoisie

The Barcelona bourgeoisie chose this luxurious boulevard and the adjoining streets to build their new residences. He used the great names of the time, such as Gaudí, Puig i Cadafalch, Domènech i Montaner, Enric Sagnier and Marceliano Coquillat. Five artists that coincide in the famous Apple Discord. An architectural complex that attracts thousands of visitors every day in the middle of Paseo de Gracia.

Together with the work of these artists, the other great contribution of the Eixample was the design of the islands of buildings. An octagonal framework that initially revolutionized the so-called Quadrat d'Or. Between the Dreta del Eixample and a part of the Antigua Esquerra.

This concept ended up being imitated by a good part of the city, although its origin and the modernist estates that occupied it are still around the Rambla Catalunya, Paseo de Gracia and Paseo de Sant Joan, the main avenues of the Dreta del Eixample. A traditionally bourgeois neighborhood that competes with Sarrià-Sant Gervasi and Pedralbes for attracting the most affluent families in Barcelona.

Residence, commercial and office use

Its central location and its social recognition mean that many neighbors of a lifetime do not want to give up living in the neighborhood. While new upper-middle class families choose to settle in the area.

Among its main uses are not only residential, but also commercial use and corporate offices. Paseo de Gracia, Rambla Catalunya or Avenida Diagonal, between Francesc Macià and Paseo de Sant Joan, are some of the most sought-after streets among major brands.
